5th Avenue Frogger
Retro arcade game Frogger modded to use real-time traffic information from the busy New York road.
5th Ave Frogger is similar to the 80’s classic Frogger except the cars you dodge are actual cars driving down 5th ave in real time.
This year is Frogger’s 30 (ish) birthday. To celebrate, I wanted to imagine what Frogger would be like if it was developed today.
The project has it’s own Tumblr site, which you can visit here

About
I promise that I’ll not share any more retro games, but this one has worked out to be such a gas that I had to show y’all. It’s an old 1980’s Amiga (from Commodore). The pinball and the Asteroids variations play wonderfully, and this setup let me cheat my way through the campy arcade game Escape from the Planet of the Robot Monsters. That’s one game that had vexed me since I was 23, so finishing it felt like removing a splinter.

If you think retro gaming on an Amiga might be a neat diversion, you can find this wonderful emulator here.
(And feel free to reply with a screen-shot of your favorite game! I’d love to see ‘em.)
I’ve been feeling nostalgic lately, so I developed an itch to play some old arcade games. Sadly, these games are so old that they will not install in MS Vista. (Not even in WIN 95 mode!) Happily, some operating-system geeks put together a package that will emulate an entire MS-DOS machine and run that “soft” machine as an application in a window. (You can find it here.)
I was delighted when the DOS shell began running these old games, but on launching the game Defender I hit a snag. Only the game’s intro screen displayed, so the game still would not play. What had I missed? On a second look at the keyboard options, I found the problem. I had ignored the most important keystroke: “q” to drop a virtual quarter into the game. Now that’s authentic!
My three step plan for the rest of the day:
◊ Tune in a jazz station
◊ Turn up the volume
◊ Remove the knob
